Tamatsukuri Onsen is an old hot spring resort with traditional Japanese inns along the Tamayu River, which empties into Lake Shinji, the seventh largest lake in Japan. Known for its mild alkaline water containing sulfate and chloride, it has long been beloved as “bijin-no-yu,” which means the “hot spring to make the skin beautiful.” Its therapeutic effects were first described in the Izumo Fudoki, the ancient records of Izumo Province, which was compiled under the imperial order in the 8th century.
