Matsushima is a group of about 260 pine-covered islands on Matsushima Bay in Miyagi Prefecture, which is designated as one of the three most beautiful scenic spots in Japan. The four best viewpoints that command spectacular views are the summits of Otakamori, Tomiyama, Ogidani, and Tamonzan. Along the coastlines are historical buildings such as Entsu-in, a temple known for its rose garden, and Zuigan-ji, a representative Zen temple founded in 828 by Priest Ennin and reconstructed in 1609 by Feudal Lord Date Masamune.
