About the ISA CCST Level 1 Exam

The ISA Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) certification is intended for technicians who work with
industrial automation, instrumentation, measurement, and control systems.
CCST technicians may work with instruments and systems used to measure and control variables such as pressure,
temperature, level, flow, and other process conditions.

According to ISA, the CCST Level 1 exam currently contains 150 multiple-choice questions
and has a four-hour testing duration.

Level 1 Exam Details
Questions 150
Duration 4 hours
Question format Multiple choice

ISA currently requires Level 1 candidates to have at least five years of combined education and training,
including a minimum of one year of related work experience.
Candidates should always confirm the latest eligibility requirements directly with ISA before applying.

CCST Level 1 Study Points

The CCST Level 1 exam is strongly weighted toward practical instrumentation work.
A useful study strategy is to spend the most time on calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting,
and repair, while also developing a working understanding of commissioning and documentation.

Domain 1: Calibration, Maintenance, Repair, and Troubleshooting

Domain 1 is the largest part of the Level 1 exam.
ISA lists this domain as approximately 75% of the Level 1 test.
For this reason, it should normally receive the greatest share of your study time.

  • Calibration procedures and tolerance evaluation
  • As-found and as-left calibration results
  • Preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance
  • Instrument condition assessment
  • Repair and replacement decisions
  • Selection and use of calibration and test equipment
  • Electrical and process-variable measurements
  • 4–20 mA loops and related calculations
  • Systematic troubleshooting methods
  • PID control and tuning fundamentals
  • Process isolation and safe maintenance practices
  • Hazardous-location installation practices
  • Industrial networking and data-highway troubleshooting
  • ICS cybersecurity fundamentals
  • Industrial wireless systems
  • Arc-flash and electrical-safety awareness

Calibration and Measurement

Calibration is one of the most important foundations for Level 1 preparation.
You should understand how to compare an instrument with an appropriate reference standard,
how to interpret calibration tolerance, and how to record both as-found and as-left conditions.

You should also be comfortable working with common instrumentation signals such as 4–20 mA,
1–5 V, resistance-based temperature inputs, thermocouple signals, and pneumatic signals.
Basic calculations involving percentage of span, current, voltage, resistance, and engineering-unit scaling
are especially useful.

Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting questions often require you to identify the most logical next step rather than immediately replacing equipment.
A structured approach is important: verify the process condition, check power and utilities,
follow the signal path, compare field conditions with drawings, and isolate the fault using measurements.

For example, if a transmitter output is correct in the field but the control system receives an incorrect value,
the wiring, junctions, barriers, isolators, and receiving input should be investigated before replacing the transmitter.

Safety and Hazardous Locations

Level 1 preparation should also include practical safety concepts related to instrument maintenance.
This includes lockout/tagout, stored energy, pressure isolation, chemical exposure,
SDS information, PPE, electrical hazards, and safe work in classified hazardous locations.

For hazardous-location installations, equipment markings, cable glands, seals, barriers,
grounding, bonding, and the applicable protection method must be treated as part of the complete installation.

Industrial Networks and Cybersecurity

Modern instrumentation work also involves industrial communication systems.
Basic troubleshooting may include checking cables, ports, switches, power, addressing,
network configuration, grounding, shielding, electromagnetic interference, and device diagnostics.

For cybersecurity, focus on practical control-system concepts such as least privilege,
controlled access, removable-media procedures, protected configuration backups,
network segmentation, and authorized change management.

Domain 2: Project Start-up, Commissioning, Loop-check, Project Organization, and Planning

ISA lists Domain 2 as approximately 15% of the Level 1 exam.
This domain focuses on verifying that newly installed or modified control systems are correctly installed
and operate as intended before normal service.

  • As-built verification
  • Field inspection of new control-system installations
  • Loop functional testing
  • Simulated process-variable inputs
  • Alarm and interlock verification
  • Final control element testing
  • Valve stroke and fail-action checks
  • Installation quality and equipment identification
  • Hazardous-location verification before commissioning

Loop Functional Testing

A loop test should confirm more than a single instrument reading.
The complete signal path may include the sensor or simulated input, transmitter,
control-system input, controller logic, output signal, final control element, alarms,
interlocks, and feedback.

Testing several points across the operating range can reveal scaling,
configuration, linearity, or signal-path problems that may not be visible from a single test point.

Final Control Elements

Control valves and other final control elements should be checked for correct direction,
travel, response, feedback, utilities, mechanical freedom, and specified fail action.
A valve that reaches both endpoints can still have problems such as sticking,
nonlinearity, linkage errors, or incorrect position feedback at intermediate positions.

Domain 3: Documentation

ISA lists Domain 3 as approximately 10% of the Level 1 exam.
Documentation is essential because technicians rely on accurate drawings, records,
and configuration information during calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and commissioning.

  • P&IDs and instrument symbols
  • Loop and wiring diagrams
  • Calibration and maintenance records
  • As-found and as-left documentation
  • Technical and regulatory reporting
  • Industrial network configuration records
  • As-built drawings and redlines
  • Document revision and change control

P&IDs and Loop Drawings

P&IDs provide process context and show how instruments, valves, vessels,
and process lines relate to each other.
Loop and wiring diagrams provide more detailed signal paths, terminals,
junctions, barriers, and control-system connections.

Using both types of drawings together with field measurements is an effective way to understand
how the system should work and compare it with what the system is actually doing.

Maintenance and As-Built Records

Good maintenance records should be accurate, traceable, and detailed enough to explain the fault,
the work performed, the parts replaced, the test results, and the final equipment condition.
Historical calibration data can also reveal drift or repeated failures.

When field conditions differ from controlled drawings, the discrepancy should be resolved through the approved
document-control or change-management process rather than informally altering the drawing or installation.

Recommended Study Approach

Because Domain 1 represents most of the Level 1 exam, it makes sense to begin with calibration,
measurement, troubleshooting, and maintenance, then move into commissioning and documentation.

  • Review the study text for one topic.
  • Practice questions from that topic.
  • Review explanations for incorrect answers.
  • Use the glossary to confirm unfamiliar terms.
  • Repeat weak sections until the concepts become familiar.
  • Use the 50-question test mode to check overall readiness.
