How to Fix “Signing for Requires a Development Team” in Xcode

When you build or run an iOS app in Xcode, you may see an error similar to the following:

Signing for "AppName" requires a development team. Select a development team in the Signing & Capabilities editor.

This error means that Xcode does not know which Apple development team it should use to code sign the app.

In many cases, selecting a Team in the Signing & Capabilities tab fixes the problem immediately. However, the same error can also be caused by a missing Apple Account, an invalid Bundle Identifier, inconsistent signing settings across targets, or incorrect manual-signing settings.

What does “Signing for requires a development team” mean?

Apps that run on physical Apple devices normally need to be code signed.

Xcode therefore needs to know which Apple Developer team should provide the signing identity and provisioning information for the target.

Signing for "AppName" requires a development team. Select a development team in the Signing & Capabilities editor.

Apple’s current documentation instructs developers to assign the project to a team so Xcode can create the provisioning profile required by the app. With automatic signing enabled, Xcode manages development provisioning profiles for you. :contentReference[oaicite:7]{index=7}

Common causes

1. No Team is selected in Signing & Capabilities

This is the most common cause.

It often happens after creating a new project, cloning a project from Git, or opening a project on a different Mac.

2. Your Apple Account is not added to Xcode

If Xcode does not have access to your Apple Account, your development team may not appear in the Team menu.

3. The wrong target is configured

Signing settings are applied per target.

If your project contains app extensions, tests, widgets, or notification extensions, one of those targets may still have no development team selected.

4. Automatically manage signing is disabled

When automatic signing is disabled, you are responsible for selecting compatible certificates and provisioning profiles manually.

Apple notes that when automatic signing is used, Xcode manages development provisioning profiles. :contentReference[oaicite:8]{index=8}

5. The Bundle Identifier is invalid or unavailable

A duplicate, incorrect, or mismatched Bundle Identifier can prevent Xcode from creating the required signing assets.

6. One target has different signing settings

The main app target may be configured correctly while a test target or app extension still has no team assigned.

Typical situations where the error appears

  • Running a new Xcode project on a physical iPhone
  • Building a project cloned from GitHub
  • Moving a project to another Mac
  • Reinstalling Xcode
  • Removing an Apple Account from Xcode
  • Changing the Bundle Identifier
  • Adding a Widget or Notification Service Extension
  • Disabling automatic signing

How to check the signing configuration

1. Open Signing & Capabilities

  1. Open the project in Xcode.
  2. Select the project in the Project Navigator.
  3. Select the application target.
  4. Open the “Signing & Capabilities” tab.
  5. Check the “Team” field.

If Team is set to None, select the appropriate Apple development team.

2. Check the Bundle Identifier

On the same screen, verify the Bundle Identifier.

com.example.myapp

The Bundle Identifier should identify your app and must be compatible with the App ID and provisioning configuration used for signing.

3. Check your Apple Account

Open the Xcode account settings:

Xcode → Settings → Accounts

If your Apple Account is missing, add it and sign in.

Solution 1: Select a development team

This should be the first fix you try.

  1. Open your project in Xcode.
  2. Select the project.
  3. Select the application target.
  4. Open Signing & Capabilities.
  5. Select your team from the Team menu.

Tip: If the project contains test targets or extensions, check their Signing & Capabilities settings as well.

Solution 2: Enable Automatically manage signing

If you do not need to manage provisioning profiles manually, automatic signing is usually the simplest option.

  1. Select the target.
  2. Open Signing & Capabilities.
  3. Enable “Automatically manage signing”.
  4. Select the appropriate Team.

With automatic signing enabled, Xcode manages development provisioning profiles automatically. :contentReference[oaicite:9]{index=9}

Apple also supports Xcode-managed distribution provisioning when automatic signing is selected for App Store Connect uploads. :contentReference[oaicite:10]{index=10}

Solution 3: Add your Apple Account to Xcode

If your development team does not appear in the Team menu, add your Apple Account to Xcode.

  1. Open Xcode.
  2. Choose Xcode → Settings.
  3. Open Accounts.
  4. Click the add button.
  5. Sign in with your Apple Account.

Then return to Signing & Capabilities and select the Team again.

Solution 4: Check every target

Projects with multiple targets may have inconsistent signing settings.

Check targets such as:

  • Main application
  • Unit Tests
  • UI Tests
  • Widget Extension
  • Share Extension
  • Notification Service Extension

Open Signing & Capabilities for each relevant target and select the correct Team.

Solution 5: Change the Bundle Identifier

Sample projects and cloned projects sometimes use a Bundle Identifier that cannot be registered under your account.

Change it to a unique identifier.

Before:

com.example.app

After:

com.yourdomain.myapp

Solution 6: Check DEVELOPMENT_TEAM from Terminal

You can inspect the build settings with xcodebuild.

xcodebuild -showBuildSettings | grep DEVELOPMENT_TEAM

If a team is configured, the output may look like this:

DEVELOPMENT_TEAM = ABCDE12345

If the value is empty, the target may not have a development team configured.

Solution 7: Check DEVELOPMENT_TEAM in the project settings

Internally, an Xcode project may contain a setting similar to:

DEVELOPMENT_TEAM = ABCDE12345;

If the project is stored in Git, comparing project-file changes can sometimes reveal that this setting was removed or changed.

Warning: Avoid editing project.pbxproj manually unless necessary. It is safer to update signing settings through Xcode.

Solution 8: Refresh provisioning profiles

If the Team is correct but signing still fails, a cached provisioning profile may be outdated.

Apple documents a method for forcing Xcode to request a fresh provisioning profile by removing unwanted cached profiles and rebuilding. :contentReference[oaicite:11]{index=11}

The cached provisioning profiles are typically located at:

~/Library/MobileDevice/Provisioning Profiles/

You can list the directory from Terminal:

ls ~/Library/MobileDevice/Provisioning\ Profiles/

After removing an obsolete profile, rebuild the project so automatic signing can request an updated profile.

Important: Back up provisioning profiles first if you may need them later.

If you use manual signing

When Automatically manage signing is disabled, verify all of the following:

  • App ID
  • Development certificate
  • Provisioning profile
  • Registered device
  • Bundle Identifier

Apple states that a manually created development provisioning profile requires an App ID, one or more development certificates, and one or more registered devices. :contentReference[oaicite:12]{index=12}

If the error occurs with xcodebuild or CI

If the project builds successfully in the Xcode GUI but fails in CI or with xcodebuild, you can explicitly pass the development team in some workflows.

xcodebuild \ -project MyApp.xcodeproj \ -scheme MyApp \ DEVELOPMENT_TEAM=ABCDE12345 \ build

However, specifying DEVELOPMENT_TEAM alone is not enough if the required certificate or provisioning profile is unavailable on the build machine.

If the problem still persists

Check the following items in order:

  1. Your Apple Account is added to Xcode.
  2. The correct Team is selected.
  3. Automatically manage signing is enabled when appropriate.
  4. The Bundle Identifier is valid and unique.
  5. All relevant targets use valid signing settings.
  6. The signing certificate has not expired or been revoked.
  7. The provisioning profile is still valid.

Important notes

Do not casually change an existing app’s Team ID or Bundle Identifier. These values may be connected to capabilities such as Push Notifications, Associated Domains, Sign in with Apple, and your App Store Connect configuration.

Organizations may also restrict automatic signing operations for Developer-role members, including App ID or device registration. :contentReference[oaicite:13]{index=13}

Summary

The Xcode error “Signing for requires a development team” means that Xcode cannot determine which development team should be used to sign the target.

In most cases, open Signing & Capabilities, select the correct Team, and enable Automatically manage signing.

If that does not solve the issue, check your Apple Account, Bundle Identifier, target-specific signing settings, certificates, and provisioning profiles.
