During Gradle Sync, Android Studio can report “Parameter specified as non-null is null” inside GradleTaskExecutorImpl instead of showing the project’s original synchronization failure. This is a known IDE issue in which the sync-failure reporting path receives a null error message and then throws a second exception that obscures the useful error.
Representative log
java.lang.NullPointerException:
Parameter specified as non-null is null:
method com.android.studio.ml.gradle.buildsystem.GradleTaskExecutorImpl$syncEventsFlow$1$2.syncFailed,
parameter errorMessage
Build Output or the IDE log may contain a different Gradle error immediately before this stack trace. Changing null handling in your application, Kotlin sources, or Gradle scripts will not repair an exception thrown by this Android Studio component.
Cause
When Gradle Sync fails, Android Studio’s sync event pipeline receives a failure reason as errorMessage. In affected IDE builds, one failure path can supply null to a callback whose Kotlin parameter is declared non-null. The syncFailed callback then throws its own exception while the IDE is trying to report the original problem.
Google lists this problem as Issue #471649995 under the Import/Sync fixes for Android Studio Panda 4 Canary 2. It is an Android Studio tooling defect, not a NullPointerException produced by the Android app at runtime.
Affected conditions and versions
- Android Studio performs Gradle Sync or imports a project.
- The underlying sync fails because of a dependency, network, Gradle configuration, or another problem.
- The sync event does not provide a concrete error message.
- The IDE predates the Issue #471649995 fix, such as an affected Panda 4 preview build.
The first version explicitly listed with the fix is Android Studio Panda 4 Canary 2. Updating to the stable Android Studio Panda 4 (2025.3.4) or a later release provides an IDE build that includes the correction.
Recommended resolution
- Update Android Studio to Panda 4 (2025.3.4) or later. Use Help > Check for Updates, or Android Studio > Check for Updates on macOS.
- Quit and restart the IDE. If several Android Studio versions are installed, check Help > About and make sure the corrected version is actually running.
- Run Gradle Sync again. Choose File > Sync Project with Gradle Files.
- Resolve the original sync failure now shown by the IDE. The IDE fix prevents the reporting callback from masking the failure; it does not automatically repair a missing dependency, repository outage, authentication problem, or incompatible Gradle configuration.
Alternative when the IDE cannot be updated
If organizational constraints prevent an immediate IDE update, run Gradle from a terminal to bypass Android Studio’s sync-notification path and expose the underlying failure.
./gradlew help --stacktrace --info
On Windows, use:
gradlew.bat help --stacktrace --info
This does not fix the known IDE defect. It can, however, reveal an earlier network error, authentication failure, unavailable dependency version, or Gradle/JDK compatibility problem. Treat it as a diagnostic workaround and update Android Studio when possible.
How to verify the fix
- Confirm in Help > About that the IDE is Android Studio Panda 4 (2025.3.4) or later.
- Run Gradle Sync again.
- Verify that the IDE log no longer contains
GradleTaskExecutorImpl...syncFailed, parameter errorMessage. - If synchronization still fails, identify the newly visible first Gradle error rather than the secondary IDE exception.
- Compare the result with
./gradlew helpto distinguish an IDE-specific problem from a build-configuration failure.
Cautions
Do not search your app for a variable named errorMessage and change it. The com.android.studio.ml.gradle.buildsystem package in the stack trace belongs to Android Studio.
Invalidate Caches and deleting the .gradle directory are not substitutes for the IDE fix. They may help only when cache corruption is an independent root cause. Preserve diagnostic logs first, and consider dependency re-download time and offline build requirements before removing caches.
Summary
“Parameter specified as non-null is null: … syncFailed, parameter errorMessage” is a known Android Studio exception raised while reporting a Gradle Sync failure. Google lists it as fixed in Panda 4 Canary 2, and the correction is included in stable Panda 4 and later releases. Update the IDE, sync again, and then address the original Gradle error that the faulty callback previously concealed.
