After upgrading to Android Gradle Plugin (AGP) 9.4, Gradle Sync or a build may stop with “Minimum supported Gradle version is 9.6.0.” This normally means that the project’s Gradle Wrapper is older than the minimum version required by AGP 9.4.
Representative error
Minimum supported Gradle version is 9.6.0. Current version is 9.5.0.
Please fix the project's Gradle settings.
The “Current version” value varies by project.
Cause
Google’s AGP 9.4 release notes list Gradle 9.6.0 as both the minimum and default Gradle version, and JDK 17 as the minimum and default JDK. If AGP is upgraded to 9.4 while gradle/wrapper/gradle-wrapper.properties still selects an older Gradle distribution, AGP rejects the build during initialization.
Affected configurations
- The project uses AGP 9.4.x.
- The Gradle Wrapper is older than 9.6.0.
- Android Studio, the command line, or CI invokes the project Wrapper.
This is a documented AGP 9.4 compatibility requirement, not a confirmed defect that requires a future patch. The AGP and Gradle versions must be aligned.
Recommended fix
1. Check the active Gradle and JVM versions
./gradlew --version
On Windows, run gradlew.bat --version.
2. Upgrade the Gradle Wrapper to 9.6.0
./gradlew wrapper --gradle-version 9.6.0
On Windows, use gradlew.bat wrapper --gradle-version 9.6.0. If the wrapper task cannot start, update distributionUrl in gradle/wrapper/gradle-wrapper.properties to the official distribution:
distributionUrl=https\://services.gradle.org/distributions/gradle-9.6.0-bin.zip
3. Commit the complete Wrapper update
Review and commit gradle-wrapper.properties together with updated gradle-wrapper.jar, gradlew, and gradlew.bat files. Developers and CI will then use the same Gradle version.
4. Select JDK 17 or newer
Check the Gradle JDK in Android Studio and JAVA_HOME in CI.
./gradlew --version
java -version
5. Sync and rebuild
./gradlew --stop
./gradlew clean
./gradlew assembleDebug
A clean build is not always required, but it is useful when validating the toolchain change.
Alternative
If Gradle 9.6.0 cannot be adopted immediately, temporarily revert the AGP 9.4 upgrade and use an earlier AGP compatible with the current Gradle version. Check that release’s official compatibility table and manage AGP and Gradle as a coordinated toolchain. Installing a newer Gradle globally does not fix a project that still invokes an older Wrapper.
How to verify the fix
./gradlew --versionreports Gradle 9.6.0 or newer and JVM 17 or newer.- Gradle Sync completes in Android Studio.
./gradlew assembleDebugfinishes without the minimum-version error.- CI invokes
./gradlewand produces the same result.
Cautions
- Use Gradle’s official distribution URL.
- Pin the version rather than using a moving value so builds remain reproducible.
- If another failure appears, check JDK selection, third-party plugins, and custom build logic separately for Gradle 9.6 compatibility.
Summary
“Minimum supported Gradle version is 9.6.0” indicates a mismatch between AGP 9.4 and an older Gradle Wrapper. Upgrade the Wrapper to 9.6.0 or newer, use JDK 17 or newer, and verify both local and CI builds. If the toolchain cannot be upgraded yet, temporarily return to an earlier compatible AGP release.
