Daisetsu-zan is a group of volcanic mountains in central Hokkaido stretching about 50 kilometers in Daisetsuzan National Park. Consisting of the highest mountain in Hokkaido, Mt. Asahi 2,290 meters high, and more than 10 others higher than 2,000 meters above sea level, this great mountain range is called “the Roof of Hokkaido.” The rich natural environment of this area is the home of a variety of alpine plants and animals including pikas, a relict species from the ice age.
