Located on the east side of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture, Hikone Castle, is a well-preserved example of early 17th century castles of Japan.The three-storied donjon, with its black roof tiles, white walls and gold ornaments, is one of – the four surviving castle towers which are designated as a National Treasure. Many areas of merchant dwellings that developed around the castle still retain its traditional ambience of the Edo period.
