Karuizawa, located at the east end of Nagano Prefecture, is well-known as a summer resort town that lies at the southeast foot of the 2,568-meter Mt. Asama, the largest active volcano on Honshu Island. With the help of a Canadian missionary named Alexander Croft Shaw, the area developed into a resort town in the late 19th century. This resort is also popular for its large outlet shopping malls, countless tennis courts and cottages as well as fashionable cafes and restaurants along the streets of the Old Karuizawa area.
