Nageiredo, or “Thrown-in Hall,” on the hill side of Mt. Mitoku in Tottori Prefecture, is the innermost sanctuary of Sanbutsu-ji Temple, which was founded by Priest Ennin in 849. Supported by square chamfered posts, the single-story, overhang-style building with a roof covered with hinoki cypress bark looks as if it were clinging to a precipitous cliff. According to tree-ring dating, it is estimated to date back to the late 11th to the early 12th century, though it still remains unknown how the structure was built on a cliff.
