Akan-ko in Hokkaido is a freshwater caldera lake that lie between two active volcanoes, Mt. Meakan and Mt. O-akan in Akan National Park. It is home to a ball-shaped green algae called marimo,which is designated as a national protected species of plant, and sockeye salmon popularly known as red salmon. Surrounded by mixed forests of conifers and deciduous trees such as Ezo Spruce and Sakhalin fir, this lake is a treasue trove of wildlife.
