Surrounded by a virgin forest at 200 meters above sea level, Noboribetsu Onsen is Hokkaido’s largest hot spring resort famous for its numerous hot springs of varying mineral contents. The largest source of hot springs is Jigokudani, or “Hell Valley” with a volcanic crater of 450 meters in diameter. The area belongs to Shikotsu-Toya National Park, which is blessed with many volcanoes and three large caldera lakes, Toya-ko, Kuttara-ko, and Shikotsu-ko, the second deepest caldera lake in Japan.
