Nanzen-ji Temple, located at the base of the forested Higashiyama mountains in Kyoto, is one of the most renowned Zen Buddhist temples in Japan. It was originally built by an emperor as a detached palace but is now the headquarters of the Nanzen-ji branch of the Rinzai Zen sect. The Leaping Tiger Garden in the compound is a perfect example of the karesansui (dry landscape garden) style, with its rock arrangement representing a tiger and her cubs crossing through the stream. The Nanzen-in Temple, one of Nanzen-ji’s sub-temples open to the public, is especially popular among tourists for its autumn foliage.
