Himeji Castle, known as “White Herron Castle” for its striking resemblance to a snowy egret taking flight, is an exquisite fortress complex which was registered as the first World Heritage site in Japan. This historic castle is marked by its well-preserved structures in the inner citadel consisting of the main tower, three small towers and corridors, all of which are designated as “National Treasures.” This castle is also famous for its elaborately-designed defensive enclosure to counter enemy invasions during the feudal period.
